Healthy Climate Monitor in a farm

Why would you use the Healthy Climate Monitor?

The most important reasons for customers to start using the Healthy Climate Monitor are animal health issues, analyzing animal behavior, verifying climate pre-sets, gaining insight into seasonal or day/night farm climate variations and cutting overall (energy) costs.

The Healthy Climate Monitor allows for quick insight into the influence of farm climate adaptations on animal welfare; Click here to see an overview of the measurement options

Measurements in the app

To Measure is to know

The Healthy Climate Monitor is a measuring device that has proven added value for farmers, veterinarians, climate specialists, feed advisers and researchers. The combination of multiple sensors and static or moving images has enabled users to timely diagnose and successfully remedy livestock problems. Various cases involving lung problems, tail biting, high concentrations of ammonia and nest and pen pollution have all successfully been resolved or prevented by Healthy Climate Monitor users.

While temperature is usually the only value measured in buildings housing people or animals, it is advisable to also measure and adapt to the measurement values of CO2, relative air humidity and ventilation.

For the use of the Healthy Climate Monitor in farms, multiple special sensors are available that measure carbon dioxide (CO2) ammonia (NH3), air-pressure levels, particle matter and sound. Graphs and diagrams displaying simultaneously measured results allow for a quick diagnosis and resolution.

With the Healthy Climate Monitor you can immediately see the effect of unit adjustments, thanks to the real-time data display in the app. Users can use the Customer portal app on their phone, or log in via their PC.

So when you make adjustments to your farm, units or climate installation, you can immediately see what the effects are. And you can see the behavior of your animals and how they react to the adjustments. There is no faster and better feedback!

Sustainability and Cutting Costs

Healthy animals cost less and this results in larger profits. Living circumstances substantially influence animal health; by improving those, we also improve our own environment and that of our planet.

An example from the pig business: Piglets need a warm place to nest. When no straw is used and when moved to the pen, piglets weighing about 7 kg (15 pounds) need a room temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, as well as floor heating. When no floor heating is installed, room temperature needs to be set at 28 degrees Celsius. Both options are costly, though we still see farmers set temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or even higher, driving piglets away from the hot floor instead of getting comfortable. Healthy young pigs produce a lot of warmth themselves, especially fast-growing piglets.

Observing animal behavior allows for quick conclusions: piglets do not lie down on the solid floor, because it’s too hot. They soil the solid floor, causing ammonia concentrations to spike.

Possible advice:

  • save energy by lowering the compartment temperature (only when you keep monitoring and piglets do not bundle up against each other)
  • start with the lowest possible comfortable pen temperature and quickly decrease to 23 degrees Celsius in a few weeks after moving the piglets into the nursery
  • set floor heating to 30 degrees Celsius when moving the piglets into the nursery, then turn off as quickly as possible
  • install a piglet nest and/or a heated panel on the floor if farm floors are grate floors only and make sure that’s where the piglets lie down in the pen

Result: by making quick and simple changes, the Healthy Climate Monitor helps improving farm climate as well as saving energy!
